Set in the year 2062, the series follows the missions of Earth spaceship Fireball XL5, of the World Space Patrol. The craft is commanded by Colonel Steve Zodiac, and his crew is composed by navigator and engineer Professor Matthew Matic, Doctor Venus, and co-pilot Robert the Robot. They are joined sometimes in their adventures by Zoonie the Lazoon, Venus's pet. The World Space Patrol is based at Space City, located on an unnamed island in the South Pacific Ocean. Gruffy but good-hearted Commander Zero is its commander-in-chief and chief controller, with young Lieutenant Ninety as his assistant. The adventures of Fireball XL5 takes its crew all over the universe, visiting alien planets and facing human and non-human deadly enemies. The series counts 39 half-hours episodes, filmed in Supermarionation. This is the last Gerry Anderson show to be filmed in black and white. Fireball XL5 was also the subject of a long-running comic strip series, most if it drawn by Mike Noble. |
